Deputy Commissioner Peter DRENNAN APM



Deputy Commissioner Drennan commenced his police officer career in 1979.  During his career he has worked across the community, national and international spheres of the AFP.  These roles have predominantly been in investigation areas of the AFP.  He is currently Deputy Commissioner National Security.  This role has responsibility for the AFP’s International Deployment Group, Counter Terrorism, Aviation and  Protection portfolios.

Key leadership and management roles undertaken by Deputy Commissioner Drennan include Assistant Commissioner in charge of the AFP’s Sydney Office, Assistant Commissioner responsible for a range of operational portfolios which include Border and International Operations, Economic Crime and Special Operations and Counter Terrorism Operations.

Throughout his career Deputy Commissioner Drennan has led many significant AFP investigations involving countering terrorism, transnational crime, narcotic trafficking and major economic crime. He has been instrumental in leading change in the AFP across a range of diverse areas including human resources, technology, organisational re-structure and investigations.

Deputy Commissioner Drennan has continued his personal development by undertaking tertiary studies at a postgraduate level in human resource management, police executive leadership programs with the Australian Institute of Police Management and external programs with the Australian Graduate School of Management and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In 2009 in recognition of his contributions to policing Deputy Commissioner Drennan was awarded the Australian Police Medal.

Outside of work Deputy Commissioner Drennan combines his two passions in life:  photography and adventure travel.  These travels have included the mountains in Nepal, Peru, New Zealand, Canada, Alaska, India and Tanzania
